HOW NIGHT MODE ACTUALLY WORKS ON MOBILE
From Apple’s iPhone to Samsung’s flagship high-end Android phones, it now has a night-time camera. Here’s how these phones do such detailed photography, even with poor lighting.
THE NIGHT MODE IS GETTING BETTER
Every year, smartphone manufacturers take the lead in improved cameras. Over the past few years, telephone cameras and the image processing equipment that amplifies them have dramatically improved photography during lighting.
Unless flash was used a few years ago, phones would have had a hard time taking incomplete photos in the dark. Now they can get amazing detail even when shooting subjects that don’t have professional mirrors or have trouble with DSLR cameras.
Apple has also upgraded its low-light camera to the iPhone 12 series. The press shooting included several dimly lit sections in the middle of the night. Using computational photography techniques, the company has expanded the night mode function to run on all cameras on the devices. This includes too wide a telephone lens.
Google’s Night Sight feature has made the company a leader in smartphone photography. Google has also recently introduced a kind of astrophotographic feature on its devices. This allows people to get detailed images of the night sky and clear images of the stars. On most smartphone cameras, these will be almost unknown.
LIGHT AND PHOTOGRAPHY
Before going into dark night mode, it is worth mentioning here a few basic photographic terms.
- Exposure: The amount of light that reaches the camera sensor. It determines how bright and dim the photo is.
- Shutter speed: The duration of exposure of the camera sensor to light. The length of the curtain allows it to stay in the light for a long time, but can cause dimming.
- Dynamic frame: The darkest (shadow) and brightest tone frame in the image (highlight).
- High Dynamic Range (HDR): An image processing technique in which a camera takes multiple images at different exposures (by changing the print speed). It then combines the images to highlight shadows and highlights.
The results of HDR imaging depend heavily on the processing software. Some manufacturers may prioritize details over others.
NIGHT MODE PROCESS
Night mode is an automatic low-light sensor excitation mode, depending on the device, or a mode that must be selected from the Camera application. In either case, taking pictures at night seems like a normal photo at first. The first difference you may notice is that it takes significantly longer to take night mode photos. This long-term speed is very important for taking pictures at night.
Night mode uses a version of the HDR method. It takes different images of the same object at different exposure levels by taking different shutter lengths. The image processing software then combines and integrates these images to expand the dynamic range of night mode photography.
This process allows you to keep the highlights of the photo in the dark. This process will reveal details that cannot be seen in a standard environmental image.
Some phones dynamically adjust the time to take a picture, depending on how dim the environment is. Others allow you to customize this setting.
All this process takes just a few seconds. When you view a photo, all the work of taking multiple photos, merging them, and optimizing the image is already complete.
VERSIONS IN NIGHT MODE
Many of Apple, Google, Samsung, Huawei, and LG’s leading devices all have night mode.
These cameras use a proprietary algorithm to determine the optimal image and then integrate the image you are viewing. The different combination processes used by each manufacturer (they are called “brackets”) are because there is a big difference between their night modes.
Some shots will have a more natural look, while others will highlight the highlights to make the image more vivid. It all depends on which aspect of each manufacturer you want to highlight.
The actual sensor is also important. Some devices combine high-megapixel cameras with a technique called Pixel Binning to capture more photos in low light conditions. This process reduces the size of large pixels to create a clearer and more detailed image.
HOW TO TAKE AMAZING PICTURES OF NIGHT MODE
No matter what phone you have, if your camera has a night mode and you want to take excellent pictures, here are a few things to keep in mind.
An important part of this process is to integrate the different maps you have taken. If long-term shots taken at night are too dim, you won’t be able to get the best shots.
Therefore, most manufacturers recommend immobility when shooting at night. In most promotional images, you will only see static themes. If possible, use a tripod when shooting at night.
Also, try shooting in an environment with at least a dim light source. This will not only improve the quality of your photos but also make them look more stunning after processing.
